Women have made important contributions to the history of Chicago, but they have long been overlooked. This tour will explore the lives and achievements of many significant Chicago women including internationally acclaimed social reformer Jane Addams, anti-lynching crusader Ida B. Wells, and philanthropist and arts patron Kate Buckingham. Highlights will include Hull House, the nation’s first settlement house; Chicago Women’s Park and Gardens; the site of the 1925 Woman’s World’s Fair; and some of the first monuments to female figures in Chicago history such as poet laureate Gwendolyn Brooks. The group will enjoy lunch at Chicken and Waffles in Bronzeville. The tour will be led by Julia Bachrach, historian, author, and curator of a new exhibit in Chicago Women’s Park and Gardens.
